The edition is based on a hand-moulded foot – a recurring motif in Baselitz’s work. The artist often describes the foot as a self-portrait and how his “connection is not upwards, but rather downwards”. Baselitz transforms the foot into rarified gold, a technique he employs in his recent bronze fire-gilded works. He previously remarked that he’d always desired to create sculptures out of gold “but never dared to do so” – until now. His gold pendent limited edition is an evolution of Baselitz’s sculptural practice from roughly hewn timber sculptures in Sculptures 2011-2015 to hand-moulded works, continuing his exploration of the complexity of memory and rough edges of humanity. This pendent is hand-crafted by jewellery artist Otto Jakob, a student of Baselitz between 1977-1980.
